This piece presented some interesting design challenges. It started when the client sent the original reference image shown here. It is a fusion of the traditional USMC “Eagle-Globe-Anchor” (EGA) and the caduceus, the traditional symbol of medicine.
I was kind of stuck on it for a while, when a different client approached me with another variation on the Marine Corps EGA. I was able to integrate that version of the EGA with the caduceus, and the result was perfect! The final touch was adding some of my hand-sculpted lettering to the bottom. That technique takes ages to do, but the result is a piece with real depth.
