The client wanted a scarab design, but the twist was he wanted some color on the piece. I originally thought I could get there with traditional patina formulations, but after a whole bunch of tries, I could not get the look the way that I wanted. I finished this piece at least a half dozen times, only to be unhappy with it, and have to blast it back to bare bronze.
Then an idea came to me. I had used Li’l Daddy Roth custom kandy paint on a bike I built a few years ago. Could I use the same kandy directly on bronze? Only one way to find out.
Ordered some in and gave it a shot. Wow! The result is absolutely stunning! The photos don’t do it justice. The kandy has just the right amount of translucence. It creates the color, without fully hiding the bronze.
I’m very excited to have this new technique in my toolkit, and plan on using it a whole lot more!
