Learn More About Personalized Derby Covers

This client approached me with a very cool Celtic character sketch, and wanted it made into a derby cover. The kicker was he wanted the hat painted green. I don’t do a lot of accent paint like that, but thought this one would really work out.

I use Lil’ Daddy Roth kandy paint on my work, and in the past had hand-brushed it on. The hat had such a large area, that getting the color even proved impossible. Decided to try something I’ve always wanted to do, and bought an airbrush. Took a few attempts to get things right, but I’m absolutely thrilled with how this came out. The trick, I learned, is to shoot a couple of layers of 2K clearcoat on the piece, then do the airbrush work, then shoot more clear over the top. I love how the translucent color responds to the polished bronze substrate.
